St. Mary's grabs major awards at North Zone Secondary School's Cricket Prize Distribution Ceremony.

The North Zone of the Secondary Schools Cricket League held its 2008 prize-giving ceremony at City Hall, Port of Spain on October 18th, with the Attorney General and Minister of Sport as guests of honour. On the night, St Mary's came away big winners in various categories.

CIC won the Under 13 League and in the Under 16 age group, the Saints were the biggest winners in the Zone. After copping the North Zone title for the 2nd year in a row, CIC went on to beat the zonal winners from South, East and Central, to come away as National champions.  CIC was the only North Zone team to win a national title for 2008. As a result, for the very first time, St Mary's was named overall TEAM OF THE YEAR in the North Zone.

In addition to the team award, the College also walked away with a number of individual trophies. The Coach of the Year was CIC's coach Mr Dewan Balwant and Best Emerging Coach was CIC's Under 14 coach Mr Charles Mohammed.  Our First XI captain, Stefan Balgobin, was named one of the Zone’s five Under 16 Cricketers of the Year and one of the five Championship division Cricketers of the Year.

Jesse Bootan and Jeremy Araujo of the Form One team were recognised for being selected on the North Zone Under 13 team.  To top it off, National Under 17 captain, Form 5 student, Yannick Ottley, was named as one of the overall 5 Cricketers of the Year in the entire Zone. He also won an award for combining excellence in academics and sport as he got 7 CXC passes. Another Form 5 student, Nicholas Alexis, also won an award for success in academics and sport.

It was perhaps the most successful awards function for the College's cricket fraternity in quite some time, as the players left the venue with their hands overflowing with a multitude of trophies and plaques. Congratulations to all who helped the College to achieve such grand success in 2008.
